Quizlet is a full-featured web application for learning vocabulary. Users create lists of vocabulary words and then Quizlet gives them tools to study their words, such as flashcards and multiple-choice tests. From the About Quizlet page:
“My mission for Quizlet is to make learning vocabulary not a chore. I know a lot of teachers assign vocabulary to students, but few students actually “absorb” words into their vocabularies after they take their test. Which kind of defeats the purpose, right? So Quizlet is my response - it aims to make learning fun, thus make learning effective. At the very least, it can help students do better on quizzes and tests even if they don’t fully “absorb” their words.”
Quizlet is built on 30,000 lines of custom-written code. I do everything on the site, including: building new features, debugging the code, answering daily support emails, communicating via the Quizlet blog, and working out business deals. I think it’s safe to say that Quizlet is my crowning achievement.
I started Quizlet in October 2005, and I continue development every day. I opened it to the public in January 2007, and three months later it had 16,000 users. Growth continues rapidly, with several hundred new sign ups per day. I love working on it, and it constantly holds my attention. The best part is the hundreds of users who have written to me to express their thanks - check out this list of testimonials from Quizlet users.
